Nono Zwane (Centurion) is excited to take part in both the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K (Sunday, 24 August 2025) and the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K (Wednesday, 24 September 2025), creating awareness as a CANSA Champion.

Diagnosed with Stage 2B Breast Cancer (ductal carcinoma receptor-positive - a type of breast cancer where the cancer cells have receptors for estrogen and/or progesterone, and the cancer originates in the milk ducts) at the age of 36, Zwane underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a segmentectomy, and 30 days of radiation.

“My advice to others who are currently dealing with the disease is to first accept your diagnosis. This will give you so much strength,” says Zwane. “Mental strength is very important when living with cancer. It’s not your fault that you have the disease - and it can be curable. Keep fighting and stay strong. Lean on your loved ones; it takes a village to get through a cancer diagnosis. Listen to your doctors. Do some light exercise without overexerting yourself - it will do you a world of good.”

“Exercise helps with mental strength, which is valuable when faced with any medical challenges,” she adds. “Your body also stands a better chance of fighting when you are fit. Exercising with a group or participating in events is a fantastic diversion. The camaraderie keeps you going - it gives you a sense of belonging to a community.”

Zwane has previously taken part in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K in 2023 and 2024, as well as the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K in 2024. “I love the route and scenery, as the race takes us through the beautiful cities of Tshwane and Joburg, showcasing vibrant culture, historic landmarks, and scenic views. It’s a truly rewarding experience. I’ll definitely be participating in both events again this year. I’m excited to create awareness as a CANSA Champion and look forward to encouraging other cancer survivors - and showing survivors that there is life after cancer, and it’s even better.”

In closing, Zwane shares a heartfelt message: “To all those who are facing cancer, I want you to know that you are not alone. As a cancer survivor, I understand the fear, uncertainty, and pain that come with this diagnosis. But I also know that there is hope. Hope is what gets us through the darkest times. Hope gives us the strength to keep going, even when we feel like giving up. Hope reminds us that we are stronger than we think, braver than we feel, and capable of overcoming even the most daunting challenges.

My journey with cancer taught me many valuable lessons, but perhaps the most important is the power of living in the present moment. Don’t wait for tomorrow to do what you can do today. Don’t let fear hold you back from pursuing your dreams. And don’t lose sight of what truly matters - love, family, friends, and community.”

“It’s fantastic to have Nono Zwane take part in both the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K and the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “Nono is a true inspiration. Her story is powerful, and through her participation in both events, she’s able to inspire, support, and guide others - whether they’re runners, walkers, or spectators - who may be facing similar challenges.”
