The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report on corruption at Tembisa Hospital clearly proves how deeply entrenched corruption is within health departments, thus depriving the public of effective healthcare.

The report, released by the SIU earlier today, reveals how approximately R2 billion earmarked for healthcare services was looted and stolen through a web of fraud and corruption.

Although the interim report highlights the complexity of the investigation and the need for further inquiry, it clearly indicates irregularities, fraudulent activities, and corruption by officials and service providers alike.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has consistently warned that mismanagement, corruption and maladministration are like a cancer eating away at public healthcare in South Africa, and that offenders should be arrested and imprisoned if found guilty.

Syndicates are the only ones benefiting from these corrupt activities, while people in public hospitals pay with their lives as a result of the serious shortages in the sector, which lead to poor or no service delivery.

The party's report on the state of the country’s public hospitals, released in November 2023, specifically highlighted these issues and thoroughly exposed the decline of the public healthcare system.

People such as Babita Deokaran, who exposed the fraud at Tembisa Hospital, also pay with their lives – as she did in 2021.

The Freedom Front Plus hopes that these investigations will be properly concluded and that offenders will face consequences for their actions. The party will closely monitor any developments in this regard.

The country has been marred by lawlessness for too long; the time has come for law and order to be restored.
