The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in KwaZulu-Natal calls for an independent investigation after a learner from a school in uMhlathuze was allegedly seriously assaulted at a school event after school hours.
According to the information provided to the party, the learner sustained serious injuries and is currently being treated at a local hospital's ICU.
There are allegations that the school's response was not in line with the urgency and seriousness of the incident. According to the party's knowledge, the alleged perpetrators are allowed to continue participating in school social activities and are still victimising other learners.
The Freedom Front Plus has already submitted a formal written request to the MEC for Education, Mr Sipho Hlomuka, as well as to the relevant district department for a comprehensive and independent investigation.
The investigation should determine, among other things:
• What exactly caused the learner's serious injuries;
• Whether the school’s handling of the incident was appropriate and accountable;
• What preventive measures are currently in place to avoid similar incidents;
• Whether there are relevant policies, supervisory staff and monitoring equipment in place, and whether these were correctly applied at the time of the incident.
Bullying and violence in schools should never be normalised or ignored.
It is the seed of a violent society and has to be nipped in the bud at once. The safety and protection of learners should always come first.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep a close eye on the matter and is prepared to consider further action if necessary.
