Farm attack in Heidelberg once again highlights rural safety shortcomings

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) strongly condemns the brutal farm attack on Jan and Elna Dhooge of Schikfontein outside Heidelberg.

This attack, which took place on Tuesday evening, is not only a crime against two beloved community members, but also a shocking reminder of the unacceptable levels of violence associated with farm attacks and murders.

Five armed and masked attackers overpowered the couple in their home, shooting Jan in the neck and seriously assaulting Elna.

The fact that they survived the attack is nothing short of a miracle.

This incident substantiates the Freedom Front Plus's argument that farm attacks and murders are not ordinary crime.

They are targeted, violent offences often characterised by extreme brutality.

Government's constant failure to prioritise rural safety betrays the people who produce food, create jobs and sustain communities.

The party will keep applying pressure on both national and provincial level, demanding a concrete safety plan for rural areas.

The Freedom Front Plus also expresses its condolences to the Dhooge family and wishes them a speedy recovery.
