The ANC clearly prefers appointing controversial individuals to key positions rather than actually addressing the service delivery crisis in the Free State.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) notes the appointment of Agnes Koloi as administrator of the Nketoana Local Municipality, which is currently under an article 139 intervention.

Koloi is standing trial on corruption charges arising from her time as Mayor of the Moqhaka Local Municipality. She also resigned from her position as MEC for Social Development in 2023 amid mounting public and political pressure.

It is alarming that an individual facing corruption charges is appointed to help stabilise an already struggling Municipality, particularly without any proven record of successful municipal intervention.

As chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance, the Freedom Front Plus will request the MEC, Saki Mokoena, to thoroughly motivate Koloi’s appointment, and will also demand a detailed explanation in writing of her mandate and the expected outcomes of the intervention at Nketoana.

Furthermore, the Freedom Front Plus will closely monitor the intervention's progress, just as it is already overseeing other article 139 interventions across the Free State.

The unfortunate truth is that to date, these interventions have not brought about any tangible improvements in municipal functioning and service delivery.

Ultimately, the root of the problem remains failed political governance, therefore, it is crucial for voters to oust the ANC from municipal councils with the upcoming municipal elections.
