A 50-year-old woman has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for using fraudulent identity documents and a bank statement to buy an iPhone.

Lynda Elize Schneider visited a cellphone shop in Schweizer-Reneke in July 2025 to apply for an Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 1TB on contract. She submitted fraudulent ID documents and a bank statement to the shop assistant, who then approved the contract.

Schneider received the handset, but because the documentation was forged, the transaction was invalid and left unpaid.

Following an investigation by the SAPS, Schneider was arrested and brought before the court. She pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and contravention of the Identification Act, and was convicted on both counts.

The Vryburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court handed down a seven-year prison sentence for fraud, alongside a three-year sentence for contraventions of the Identification Act. The sentences will run concurrently. In addition, the court declared Schneider unfit to possess a firearm.

North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams, commended the investigating officer, Detective Captain Martin Joseph of the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, for his diligent work on the case. He added that the thorough investigation was key to securing the successful prosecution.

Adams also praised Advocate Mosegedi from the Director of Public Prosecutions for effectively presenting the State's case, noting that his professionalism in court ensured justice was served.
